Ylva Johansson, the Commissioner-designate for Home Affairs
Ylva Johansson is the Swedish Commissioner-designate for Home Affairs. Johansson is the Swedish Minister of Employment since 2014 and she had previously held other ministerial portfolios such as Social Affairs, Schools and Health. A math, physics and chemistry teacher by training, she is a member of the Swedish Social Democratic Party, which is embedded in the S&D at the European Parliament. The President-elect of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen assigned her the mission of developing a New Pact on Migration and Asylum in accordance with a comprehensive approach that includes several aspects such as external borders, the asylum and return system and the comeback to a fully functioning Schengen Area. Von der Leyen intends to explore pathways for legal migration towards the EU and to further strengthen cooperation with origin and transit countries in order to fight human trafficking and ensure repatriations. The future Commissioner will also be responsible of overseeing the capacity-building of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, which should play a critical role in developing a permanent and reliable approach to search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean.
