US President Donald Trump announces ISIS’s leader Al-Baghdadi died in Syria
On 27 October, the US President Donal Trump announced that Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi, the main ISIS’ leader, died in Syria in the night of 26 October. According to the White House’ official statement, Al- Baghdadi, who has been the national security priority of Trump’s administration, killed himself in a dead-end tunnel in north-western Syria together with three children and several collaborators. The statement also reports that no US solder got injured during the operation. Trump expressed his gratitude to Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Russia and Syrian Kurdish for the cooperation. The international community reacted to the announcement with both enthusiasm and prudence. The Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that what happened “marked a turning point in our joint fight against terrorism” while the Russian Defence Minister declared that “it had no reliable information on the US operation”. Both the French Defence Minister Florence Parly and the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson expressed their satisfaction, warning however that the fight against terrorism was continuing.
