Turkey, Russia, France and Germany meet to discuss the Syrian situation
Turkish President Recep Erdogan invited his counterparts French President Emmanuel Macron, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel to meet on Saturday 26 October to discuss the situation in Syria. Russia and Turkey, even though sometimes also opposed, are engaged in the Astana Process, Paris supports the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) with a military presence in the area, whereas Germany is not present on the ground. After UN envoy for Syria, de Mistura, resigned from office last week, this Summit emerges with the intention of restoring the political impetus to the peace process in Syria. The meeting between the strategic actors in the conflict, often with diverging positions, aimed to find common ground on at least two major points: the creation of a constitutional committee, and the fate of Idlib province, the last major rebel hotspot. The agreement on a demilitarized zone for Idlib, settled between Ankara, Damascus, and Moscow, is fragile. On Friday 26 October, on the eve of the Summit, several clashes took place, killing seven people.
