Turkey adopts the “new action plan for migration-related issues”
At the end of July, Turkey Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu announced the new action plan for migration that includes more controls in order to stop irregular migration. Soylu assured that there will be no deportations for Syrian refugees and justified the new measures by explaining that “more than 165,000 irregular migrants have so far been detained in Turkey since the beginning of 2019 and the number is expected to exceed 300,000 by the end of this year”. In the new Migration Strategy Document, the government also forces unregistered Syrian refugees living in Istanbul to leave the city and go back to the provinces where they were first registered. Due to the protests of the refugees, the deadline was extended until 30 October. Some Syrians told the BBC that the Turkish government is using this excuse to deport people to Idlib, but Soylu denied this fact by ensuring the presence of international observers throughout the process. On 6 August, the EU announced an extra €127 million aid to improve the life conditions of people within the Turkish humanitarian program Emergency Social Safety Net (ESSN).
