Tunisian President’s party Nidaa Tounes elects two leaders over internal divisions
On 14 April members of Nidaa Tounes, President Essebsi’s party elected two rival leaders during two separated general assemblies. On one hand, Samira Ben Kaddour Belkadhi, the head of the committee charged of Congress’ preparation, organized a general assembly in the Tunisian city Hammamet that elected the lawmaker Sofian Toubel as head of the central committee. On the other hand, the political faction closer to Essebsi’s son Hafedh Caïd Essebsi met in Monastir in a parallel congress and elected the president’s son as their leader. Divisions within Nidaa Tounes started in 2015 when members of the party accused Hafedh Caïd Essebsi to control the party.
