Tunisian Independent Electoral Commission announces election on 15 September after Essebsi’s death
On 25 July, Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi passed away in a military hospital in Tunis. According to the Tunisian constitution, the President of the Parliament Mohamed Ennaceur was nominated interim President of the Republic and the Electoral Commission announced that the next presidential elections will be held on 15 September. Tunisian PM Yousself Chahed announced seven days of mourning and ordered all public institutions’ flags to be lowered to half-mast. Many international leaders expressed their condolences to the Tunisian people with several public messages. HR/VP Federica Mogherini described Essebsi as one of the most competent and courageous leaders of Tunisia. French President Emmanuel Macron stated that Essebsi was crucial for democracy and progress of Tunisia; Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan also expressed publicly his grief. On 28 July several foreign leaders took part in the funeral’s ceremony in Tunis such as heads of states of France, Qatar, Libya, Algeria, Spain and Palestine.
