Tunisian Government finds a deal with the major Union UGTT.
On 7 February the Tunisian government and the most important Tunisian trade union UGTT found an agreement that convinced UGTT to call off the strike announced for the end of February. According to the new agreement, 670.000 public employees will have a salary increase of 180 dinars (about 50 euros). UGTT underlined that the agreement would cover just 2019, as new negotiations for 2020 and 2021 will start in July. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) hasn’t reacted yet to these decisions. The next visit from Christine Lagarde, IMF’s president is set for April this year. On 9 February the government also signed a deal with the education syndicate ending the professors’ strike that had been blocking Tunisian schools for 6 months.
