Trump receives Erdogan at the White House amid growing tensions between both countries
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited Washington on 13 November, where he met with US President Donald Trump. The meeting took place amid growing tensions between both countries, including the Turkish military intervention in northern Syria and the purchase of Russia’s S-400 missile defence system. Prior to the visit, both Democrats and Republicans legislators asked Trump to cancel the meeting. An Oval office meeting took place where several senators critical of Turkish policies participated. Erdogan presented his operation in Syria as a war against terrorism. According to Arab News, Erdogan reaffirmed his stance on the Turkish purchase due to the US reluctance to sell Turkey F-35 jets. Besides, he also said that Turkey had already started to deport ISIS prisoners back to their countries, including Britain, Germany, Denmark and the United States. According to Turkish officials, 2,280 ISIS prisoners from 30 countries are currently in their hands and the will deport them all.
