Trump announces his intention to recognize Israeli sovereignty over Golan Heights
On 21 March US President Donald Trump, announced in a tweet that “it is time for the United States to fully recognize Israel’s Sovereignty over the Golan Heights” facing a strong opposition from international and regional actors. This announcement is a shift from established US policy over the issue. Israel’s PM Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the decision on twitter thanking President Trump because “At a time when Iran seeks to use Syria as a platform to destroy Israel, President Trump boldly recognizes Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights”. Syrian reaction arrived on 22 March with a statement of Syrian government condemning the American decision and affirming that “the Golan was and will always be a Syrian Arab territory”. Iran, Turkey, Russia, Egypt and the Arab League condemned the decision, considered a violation of UN’s decisions on the issue. Also the EU expressed its concern: “The European Union, in line with international law, does not recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the territories occupied by Israel since June 1967, including the Golan Heights and does not consider them to be part of Israel’s territory” said an EU spokesman to Reuters. Israel occupied the Golan Heights in 1967 war and illegally annexed it in 1981, as the UN Security Council Resolution 497 of 1981 affirms.
