Thousands of people protest against Bouteflika’s re-election in Algeria
On 22 February thousands of Algerians demonstrated in the capital and in others cities against the proposal for a Bouteflika’s 5th term. The protests, starting on Friday after the weekly prayers, were organized on social networks and continued until Sunday. They presented pro-democratic slogans and blamed the ill health of the 81 years old president. On Saturday, Algerian security forces declared that 41 people were arrested airing angry protests over “public disorder, vandalism, damage to property, violence and assault”. Despite governmental protests’ ban established in 2001, manifestations were largely tolerated. The ruling party FLN announced on 2 February that Bouteflika would run for his 5th mandate in the elections scheduled for 18 April. Opposition parties seem unable to cooperate and to agree on join candidate as announced on 21 February.
