The US-led Manama Conference boycotted by the Palestinian Authority
On 25 and 26 June the US organized in Manama, Bahrain, an international conference in the framework of the “Deal of the Century”, to underline the importance of the economy for the Israeli – Palestinian conflict resolution. Both Hamas and Fatah boycotted the conference declaring that there is no economic solution without a political agreement first. The head of Hamas political bureau, Ismail Hanyeh, also accused this conference to “open the door for normalisation between the Arab states and the Israeli occupation”. Indeed the Arab world reacted very differently to the American invitation: some countries such as Lebanon followed the Palestinian boycott, some sent official representatives (Gulf States) and others just low level representatives (Egypt, Morocco and Jordan). HR/VP Mogherini already announced that the EU would send just “technical level” representatives. The conflict resolution plan carried out by US President Trump and Senior Advisor Jared Kushner is an economic plan of $50bn to help Palestinian economy, without any guarantees in the political ground. One of the projects within the plan would be a transportation corridor that connects the West Bank with Gaza, according to Reuters. IMF’s managing director Christine Lagarde also attended the conference, and expressed her concerns about the plans declaring that “the fund’s experience in conflict-driven countries showed it can be a struggle to generate economic growth in such an environment”.
