The Summit of the Two Shores takes place in Marseille
The 5 + 5 foreign ministers (France, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Malta, Mauritania, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya) signed the “Commitments for a new ambition in the Mediterranean” in order to implement the projects proposed by civil society and to respond collectively to the common challenges in the Mediterranean region. Fruit of an initiative of the French President Emmanuel Macron, the Summit of the Two Shores launched an exercise of consultation of the Mediterranean civil society, with the ambition to revive the dynamics of cooperation in the Western Mediterranean through the implementation of concrete projects for human, economic and sustainable development in the region. Five preparatory forums were held ahead of the Marseille Summit around five themes: energies (organized by Algeria); youth, education, mobility (organized by Malta); economy and competitiveness (organized by Morocco); culture, media, tourism (organized by France); environment and sustainable development (organized by Italy). At each of these forums, it was the civil society (about two hundred participants for each event) that debated and proposed projects. The engagements were along the lines of the five themes: the Mediterranean region should be more knowledgeable and increase its mobility; increase its engagement for a more sustainable way of doing things; foster an open dialogue and promote its multicultural nature; invest in innovation, share information and foster entrepreneurship; promote the energetic transition of the region and the circular economy, green and blue, as well as taking into account the central role local government and civil society have.
