The Secretary-General of the Arab League visits Spain
On 20 March, the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, met with Mr. Josep Borrell, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Spain. Mr. Gheit expressed his hope that the Palestinian State would be recognized at the European level and in any case by the Spanish Government. Both confirmed their “common interest” for the Palestinian issue and Mr. Borrell explained that the government has taken steps within the EU to explore the possibility of “moving forward in this area” although not in an “isolated way” with the objective to create the “conditions” for several European countries to “join this initiative.” They also addressed their joint concern about the need to combat Islamophobia and other xenophobic manifestations. On another note, Ahmed Aboul Gheit pointed out that all conditions are not met for Syria’s reintegration into the Arab League. He also said that when the right conditions would be met, mechanisms will be activated through the invitation by one or several member countries to join the Arab League.
