The Ocean Viking rescues 94 persons off the coast of Libya
The rescue ship Ocean Viking has rescued 94 persons 78 km off the coast of Libya. Among the migrants and refugees rescued were 45 male and 11 female, four of them pregnant, as well as 38 children, 29 of them unaccompanied. According to Nicholas Romaniuk, search and rescue coordinator for SOS Mediterranée (the ship is operated jointly by this organization and Doctors Without Borders), they were copied on an email sent to the Libyan coastguard by AlarmPhone. “As a result, we altered our course towards the potential boat in distress and arrived in the area 90 minutes later”, Romaniuk told Al-Jazeera. The NGOs also reported that all the rescued people were in a stable condition. The Ocean Viking has rescued more than 1,000 people since August. However, over 1,000 people too have died in the Mediterranean during 2019, according to the International Organization Migration (IOM).
