The NGO Sea Watch disembarks 47 people in Sicily
On 31 January, the Italian government allowed a NGO Sea Watch’s vessel to disembark 47 people in Catania after 10 days at sea. The Italian decision came after six European Countries (Germany, France, Malta, Luxemburg, Portugal and Romania) agreed to accept a number of migrants. Interior Minister / Deputy PM Matteo Salvini declared his wish that Catania’s Prosecutor would take legal actions against the ship. On 30 January, the UNHCR launched an alarm stressing that the number of victims of migrants trying to reach Europe from Libya had risen in 2018. The mortality rate passed from 1 per 38 in 2017 to 1 per 14 in 2018. The UN Agency added that it is due to the declining engagement of rescue missions.
