The new Italian Government obtains the vote of confidence by the Parliament
On 9 and 10 September the new Italian Government obtained the approval the Parliament thanks to an alliance between the populist 5 Stars Movements (M5S), the centre-left Democratic Party (PD) and the leftist Free and Equal coalition (LEU). The political crisis started at the beginning of August, when the former Interior Minister/Vice PM Matteo Salvini announced the withdrawal of his party (the League) from the governmental coalition in order to bring the country to new elections. After his announcement, the M5S, LEU and the PD agreed on a shared programme and formed a new pro-EU and leftist government. The newly formed Government has already obtained a crucial portfolio in the recently elected European Commission, the European Commissioner-designate for Economy Paolo Gentiloni (PD), particularly taking into account that the new Italian financial law has to be agreed with the EU before the end of the year. Giuseppe Conte remains the Prime Minister of Italy and Luciana Lamorgese, who has previously worked in the planning of refugees and migrants’ reception centres, is the new Interior Minister.
