The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the 5+5 Western Mediterranean Dialogue meet in Malta
On 17 and 18 January, the 15th 5+5 Western Mediterranean Dialogue meeting took place in Malta under the Algerian-Maltese co-presidency. 7 Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the 5+5 countries (Algeria, France, Libya, Malta, Morocco, Portugal, and Spain) attended. Italy, Mauritania and Tunisia were represented at lower level. The EU High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini, the Secretary General of the Arab Maghreb Union, the President of the Anna Lindh Foundation, the Secretary-General of the Union for the Mediterranean, and the President of the Parliamentary Assembly for the Mediterranean also attended the meeting. The forum focused on security issues, in particular the fight against terrorism and radicalization, the situation in Syria, Libya and Sahel well as the peace process in the Middle East. Other issues were also discussed including the youth and sustainable development in the Western Mediterranean, as well as migration and cybercrime. In the final declaration the 10 leaders expressed their satisfaction with the 3rd annual Medthink forum that took place in Alger in June 2018, a network of think tanks initiated by the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed). Before the meeting, the leaders met some representatives of Anna Lindh Foundation and the Young Mediterranean Voices. Algeria left the co-presidency to Libya that will have to organize the 2020 summit in Tripoli. The declaration also refers to the upcoming summit of heads of state and government scheduled in June in Marseille.
