The European Parliament approves a resolution condemning Al-Sisi’s response to recent protests
On 24 October, the European Parliament (EP) approved a resolution that condemns the repression over the protests that took place last month. The EP “Strongly condemns the latest crackdown and the ongoing restrictions on fundamental rights in Egypt” such as freedom of expression, association and assembly, political pluralism and the rule of law. It also condemned the excessive use of violence against protesters considered not in line with international standards and the Egyptian Constitution itself. The EP also regretted the lack of response from the HR/VP and the Council. The resolution also invites the European Union to review bilateral relations and reinforce its support to civil society in Egypt.
