The EU launches an Action Plan to support border management in Greece
The European Commission announced an Action Plan to support Greece in managing the situation at the EU external land and sea borders with Turkey. This initiative was announced following the extraordinary Justice and Home Affairs Council held on 4 March to analyze the unfolding crisis at the Greek-Turkish border. The plan foresees specific measures to support border management such as €350 million in finance assistance to increase reception capacity, two rapid border intervention operations by FRONTEX and the deployment of 160 experts from the European Asylum Support Office (EASO). On these measures, Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson declared that “our focus is making sure that a short-term political crisis does not turn into a long-term humanitarian one”. On 6 March, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen met with the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and agreed that first measure of the Action Plan will focus on finding solutions for 1,000 to 1,500 unaccompanied migrant children on Greek islands through voluntary relocation from Greece to other EU Member States. According to the IOM, more than 13,000 people has arrived at the Turkish-Greek border since Erdogan’s decision to open Turkey’s frontiers with the EU.
