The EU continues to defend the Iranian Nuclear Deal and support the Iraqi-led regional conference
Reacting to recent tensions between the US and Iran, the EU and its Member States tried to preserve the JCPOA. Speaking after the EU Foreign Policy Council, HR/VP Federica Mogherini ensured that the EU will remain part of the deal, inviting Iran to “reverse its steps and go back to full compliance with the agreement” and declaring that according to UN’s inspectors Iran’s recent steps should not be considered as “significant non-compliance”. In fact, inspectors of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that Iran is enriching uranium to 4,5% above the 3,6% permitted in the agreement, as Teheran announced after US’ decision to restore sanctions. Mogherini also declared that shareholders of INSTEX are considering whether to include oil in the financial system. In her previous visit to Iraq, Mogherini endorsed the Iraqi initiative to organize a regional conference to discuss about the recent tensions in the Gulf between Iran and US-allied Sunni countries of the Gulf. Several European Ministers of Foreign Affair reiterated Mogherini’s declarations provoking the strong reaction of Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu who declared that this European attitude reminds him “the European appeasement of the 1930s,”.
