The EU and the AU reaffirm their partnership in Addis Ababa
On 27 February, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, together with HR/VP Josep Borell and 20 other commissioners, travelled to Addis Ababa to attend the 10th African Union (AU)-European Union (EU) Commission-to-Commission Meeting. Von der Leyen and her counterpart, the AU Chairperson Moussa Faki confirmed their mutual position on the future of EU-AU relations. They made clear that both unions must reinforce their mutual cooperation within the areas of peace and security, digital transformation, sustainable development and jobs especially for women and the youth, as well as mobility and migration. Beyond these objectives, The European Commission’s President especially focused on the importance of empowering importance of empowering local entities within each AU Member State to tackle terrorism, pointing out at the current situation in Libya and the Sahel. In the wake of the new European Green Deal, she also expressed her commitment to share EU’s knowledge on green technologies and financing with its business partners in Africa. In his statement, Faki reaffirmed that “the EU will remain “the EU will remain central” in the system partnerships of the new AU Commission, to be appointed in 2021. The meeting was complemented with Josep Borrell’s first visit to Africa as HR/VP, during which he met with the prime ministers of Sudan and Ethiopia, among other regional representatives.
