The EU adopts a €297 million assistance package to support refugees in Jordan and Lebanon
The European Union has adopted an assistance package to support refugees and host communities in Jordan and Lebanon worth €297 million via the EU Regional Trust Fund in Response to the Syrian Crisis. According to Olivér Várhelyi, the new Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, the package will support livelihood, social protection, affordable quality healthcare, water and wastewater infrastructures. €163 million will be awarded to Lebanon to contribute to economic development and social stability, to improve public water and wastewater services and for better access to quality, equitable and affordable health services. €98 million will aim at strengthening self-reliance and working towards an inclusive social protection system as well as for establishing an integrated solid waste management system in Jordan. The remaining €36 million will support the needs of Palestinian refugees from Syria in both countries. Since it was established, the Trust Fund has committed €1.8 billion in concrete actions to the region. Besides, the board of the fund decided to extend is mandate until the end of 2023.
