The Council approves EUNAVFOR MED Mission Sophia’s extension
The Council of the European Union approved on 26 September the extension of EUNAVFOR MED Operation Sophia until 31 March 2020. The mission aims to disrupt the business model of migrant smugglers and human traffickers in the Mediterranean. Last March, due to divisions within EU Member States, especially to the Italian doubts over the final destination of rescued migrants, the scope of the mission has been limited by the Council which decided to suspend the deployment of naval assets. According to EUNAVFOR MED’ official website, the actual deployed units of the mission counts only seven planes and no vessels. In addition to monitoring central Mediterranean waters, one of the task of the mission is to train the Libyan Coast Guard, a task also complicated by the political instability in Libya. On 2 October, three months after the attack on Tajoura detention centre, the EU Delegation in Libya published a statement in memory of the victims and to remind “the Libyan government of the urgency of the situation of detained refugees and migrants in and around Tripoli”. The statement was published on behalf of the Post-Tajoura Working Group that has been created in response to the tragic airstrike. It is composed by the EU, the African Union, UNHCR, IOM, OHCHR, UNICEF, Switzerland and some EU member states.
