The 5th EU League of Arab States ministerial meeting takes places in Brussels
On 4 February the meeting between Foreign Ministers of EU and League of Arab States (LAS) countries took place in Brussels. HR/VP Mogherini and the LAS Secretary – General Ahmed Aboul Gheit attended the meeting. The two parts discussed climate change, fight against illegal migration, crisis in Libya and situation in Palestine. The meeting was organized ahead of the EU – LAS summit scheduled in Sharm El Sheikh on 24 – 25 February. Due to divisions within both organizations the summit ended with no agreement on a joint statement. In the EU case, Hungarian veto didn’t allow a common position on migration. Despite divisions, HR/VP Mogherini stressed the importance of the meeting declaring that “Whatever happens in the Arab World affects Europeans and whatever happens in Europe affects the Arab World.
