Tebboune wins Algerian Presidential election with 58% of the votes
Abdelmadjid Tebboune has won the Presidential elections with 58.15% of the votes, according to the National Independent Authority on Elections (ANIE). However, the ballot has been contested by many Algerians, who boycotted the voting, leading to the lowest turnout in the country’s history, with only 39.93% of the census actually casting their votes. On 13 December, as every Friday for ten months, thousands of Algerians went to the streets to protest the election of Tebboune. Some countries such as the United States or Qatar congratulated the newly elected President, Spain being the first European country to do so. Contrary, the reaction of French President Emmanuel Macron was cold, saying that he “took note” of Tebboune’s victory. The recently elected president declared that they will not accept dictates from any country. It is said that L’Elysée preferred Azzedine Mihoubi to be elected. During the press conference after his election, Tebboune has called for dialogue with the Hirak movement, promised no mercy in the fight against corruption and the inclusion of young people in governing structures.
