Teachers’ strike in Jordan continues without a solution in sight
Teachers from the public education sector have been striking in Jordan since last 8 September in response to what they consider very low salaries and lack of respect from the Jordanian government. The strike was launched after the protest organized by the Jordanian Teachers Association (JTA) on 5 September was met with a strong police response and the detention of several protesters. Teachers demand a 50% pay rise that was agreed five years ago but has not been implemented so far. Negotiations between the JTA and the government have been going on for weeks without reaching any agreement. Jordanian authorities are reluctant to raise the teachers’ salaries due to budget constraints and fear that other public workers’ sectors might follow suit. While the majority of Jordanians believe that the teachers’ demands are legitimate, public support to the strike is shrinking due to the absence of any solution to the crisis, which is preventing one million and a half students from starting the school year.
