Teachers’ protest in Morocco
On 20 February thousands of teachers took to the streets to protest against fixed-terms contracts in Rabat; the police intervened with water cannons injuring dozen people. Authorities declared that the police intervened when some protesters got closer to the royal palace where the manifestation was not allowed. The manifestation had a symbolic importance marking eight years after the “20 February” movement was created in 2011. Abdessamad El Amrani, a protesting teacher affirmed that “Teaching must be durable and teachers must have stability in order to educate children”. A source from the education ministry anonymously said that a meeting is expected to be held with the teachers’ union to discuss their demands.
