Summit of the Southern European Union Countries takes place in Cyprus
On 29 January, the 5th Summit of the “Med-7” took place in Nicosia, Cyprus. The group includes Heads of Government and State of the Mediterranean countries of the EU: France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece and Malta. A declaration was adopted highlighting common positions on various matters of the European Union and its policies towards South Mediterranean countries. Migration was one of the main topics of the meeting. The leaders reiterated the call for “shared responsibility and solidarity” with the countries most affected by the migrants’ arrivals. The members of the Summit also demanded a stronger EU’s commitment in the southern Mediterranean and Sahel countries, in particular in the fields of security, migration, terrorism, sustainable development and climate change.
