Spanish and Moroccan Interior Ministers meet in Rabat to discuss about migration, terrorism and drug-trafficking
On 4 September, the Spanish acting Minister of Interior Fernando Grande-Marlaska met in Rabat with his Moroccan counterpart Abdelouafi Laftit to discuss about the fight against illegal migration, terrorism and drug-trafficking. The Spanish official expressed his satisfaction with the bilateral cooperation between Rabat and Madrid and described it as “direct and sincere”. Also, Laftit welcomed the relations between the two countries, noting that decisions that affect both “are made in close cooperation”. According to the Spanish Interior Ministry, cooperation between Moroccan and Spanish security forces has resulted in the detention of 155 human traffickers and a reduction of 45% in migrants’ arrivals to the Spanish coasts since the beginning of 2018. The International Organization for Migration points out that Greece is again the main route for migration through the Mediterranean, with the biggest number of arrivals this year.
