Secular Tunisian political leaders create the new party “Tahya Tounes”
On 27 January in Monastir the formation of a new political party was announced: Tahya Tounes (Long Live Tunisia). This party was created by PM Chahed’s supporters in order to compete with the Islamist party Ennahda in the next presidential elections that will be held at the end of 2019. PM Chahed did not attend the ceremony, but he is expected to lead the party. This new political party is mostly formed by former members of Nidaa Tounes (President Essebsi’s party). Tahya Tounes will be a constitutional, secular, democratic and progressive party, according to the declarations of one of the party’s leaders Mustapha Ben Ahmed. During the ceremony on Sunday, the members of the party declared that the new project will be in line with desturian values (in reference to the first Tunisian President Habib Bourguiba’s party) and that the candidates for the general elections will be voted within the militants of the party
