Saudi Arabia, UAE and Egypt reject clause calling to stop normalisation with Israel
On Monday 4 March, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Egypt opposed a statement by the Union of Arab Parliaments which urged for stopping the process of normalizing relations with Israel, reported the Shebab News Agency. Speaker of the Kuwaiti National Assembly, Marzouq Al-Ghanim, suggested that the final statement of the union’s 29th meeting, held in Amman, should indeed include such a recommendation. His Saudi counterpart, Abdullah Al-Sheikh objected saying: “Calls for stopping normalization with Israel is the authority of politicians, not the parliamentarians”, categorically asking to delete the recommendation from the statement. While representatives of the UAE and Egypt supported the recommendation, the Speaker of the Jordanian Parliament Atef Al-Tarawneh insisted it should be maintained. The Kuwaiti Speaker stressed the need of discussing the issue of Palestine and Jerusalem by saying “Our enemy [the Israeli occupation] does not want us to discuss the issue of Palestine even in our speeches”. Zafer al-Ani, deputy chairman of the Foreign Affairs, Political and National Security Committee in the Arab Parliament stressed that normalization wasn’t normal and that it “does not reflect the Arab League and the Arab Parliament, which confirmed its position on the Palestinian issue.”
