Saudi Arabia signs warship deals with Spanish and French companies
On 17 and 18 February during the International Defence Exhibition & Conference (IDEX) in Abu Dhabi, Saudi state defense company SAMI announced two important deals with Spanish “Navantia” and French “Naval Group”. The agreements between these three public companies are part of the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s strategy to diversify away from the oil-based economic system. In fact, the agreement with “Naval Group” includes building a warship, frigates, corvettes, and related items through a majority Saudi-owned joint venture with the French firm that will produce in Saudi Arabia. The Spanish “Navantia” will provide the Saudi navy with combat management systems for corvette ships. According to the Saudi Crown Prince’s plan, Saudi Arabia will produce half of the country’s required military equipment domestically by 2030.
