Saudi Arabia releases 11 intellectuals questioned over foreign ties
11 academics and writers detained by Saudi Arabia authorities have been released, according to Reuters. The intellectuals were arrested in a crackdown between 16 and 25 November and questioned over suspected links to foreign entities, receiving funds from abroad and coordination with hostile organisations, according to Saudi authorities. Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman accuses them of having ties to Qatari and Iranian intelligence. None of them have been indicted but the case remains open and charges could still be laid. Police in plainclothes raided the homes of around 10 journalists, bloggers and activists in several cities, arresting them and seizing their laptops and mobiles, according to both the London based Saudi rights group ALQST and the group Prisoners of Conscience. They also denounce the growing harassment of prisoners of conscience “by means of continued torture, sexual harassment and other kinds of abuse”. As the country assumes the presidency of the G20, activists and human rights groups are calling on international leaders to pressure Riyadh to safeguard freedoms.
