Rouhani restructures economic team in the light of new sanctions
As the new round of US sanctions will enter into force on November 4, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani is reshuffling his top economic team. On Sunday 21 October he named Farhad Dejpasand as the Economy and Finance Minister, Mohammed Shariatmadari as the Minister of Labour, Reza Rahmani as the Minister of Industries, and Mohammad Eslami Minister of Roads. Experts point that these cabinet changes show that Rouhani is trying to consolidate a “younger and more technocrat” cabinet, expected to better deal with the new round of sanctions. Rouhani’s decision comes at a time when his government is facing major economic pressures as US sanctions re-start after Trump decided to unilaterally withdraw from the Iran Nuclear Deal. In order to make the new Ministers’ appointment valid, it requires a confidence vote from Parliament.
