Putin, Erdogan and Rouhani discuss Syrian situation in Sochi
On 14 February Russian President Vladimir Putin hosted in Sochi a meeting with Turkey and Iran’s leaders Erdogan and Rouhani. The goal of the meeting was to take stock of the situation in Syria. President Putin urged his counterparts to build a common strategy in Syria and stressed the need to eliminate jihadists from Syria’s Idlib province. Iranian President agreed and referred in particular to Al-Nusra’s presence in the region. Erdogan added that safe zones in Syria “should not be left to be ruled by terrorists.” The three leaders also discussed the composition of a special committee that will have to write the new Syrian Constitution denouncing external interference. In particular, President Putin complained that Western countries “had thrown spanners in the works of UN officials, in order to prevent the authorization of the list”. This meeting in Sochi is the fourth meeting in the “Astana” formation.
