Putin, Erdogan and Rouhani agree on the formation of a constitutional committee in Syria
The presidents of Russia, Turkey and Iran held a tripartite summit on Syria last Tuesday in Ankara, with a particular focus on the situation in Idlib. Speaking at a press conference, the three guarantors of the Astana process announced the formation of a constitutional committee composed of representatives of the government, the opposition, and civil society and reiterated their attachment to the principles of territorial integrity, respect for national sovereignty and non-interference in the internal affairs of Syria. The Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan argued that the major threat to the future of Syria is the PKK and that it is time “to focus on the safe and voluntary return of Syrians to their own country”. He also stated that Turkey would not accept a “terror corridor along its borders with Syria”.
