Protests in Lebanon’s 75th Anniversary of Independence
On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of Independence, and while the military staged an invitation-only parade, Lebanese people have taken the streets not to celebrate, but to show their frustration. Since general elections took place in May, parties continue to attempt to negotiate ministerial positions and the formation of the new government, which happens to be even more complicated due to the new proportional electoral system, first applied in May elections. Lebanese President Michel Aoun stated on Wednesday 21 November: “The Lebanese people (are) sick of promises, have almost despaired of grasping interests, are tired of the indifference of decision-makers to their concerns, their unemployment, their rights and their broken dreams”, urging government formation.
