Protests against Al-Sisi take place in several Egyptian cities
On 20 September, hundreds of Egyptians took to the streets to protest against the government in Cairo’s Tahrir Square, Alexandria, Al-Mahalla, Damietta and Suez. In Suez, the protests continued also on 21 September and, during following weekend, new demonstrations took place and were countered by pro-regime rallies as well. According to Human Rights Watch, over 2,000 people have been arrested, including several foreigners, although the Egyptian government only acknowledges 1,000 detentions. Some media have also reported that security forces have used tear gas and live rounds to quell the demonstrators. The protests started after the Spain-based Egyptian businessman and actor Mohamed Ali posted several videos accusing the government of wasting money despite the harsh economic conditions for most of the population, with one in three Egyptians living below the poverty line. On 21 September, the Middle East Monitor denounced that the government had censured several media websites for reporting on the demonstrations.
