Priorities for future cooperation on migration discussed at EU-IOM strategic meeting
On 4 June, senior officials of the EU and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) met in Brussels to advance the strategic partnership between the two organisations on key aspects of European and global migration. Dimitris Avramopoulos, EU Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship, stated that “No single country or organisation can address [the challenge of migration] alone. Our cooperation with IOM is a key element in our comprehensive approach to managing migration operationally and in all aspects.” On 5 June, António Vitorino, Director-General of the IOM met with Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission in the wake of the annual EU-IOM Senior Officials meeting held the same day. They reaffirmed the close cooperation between the two partner organisations on migration and the key role of IOM in shaping a UN response to migratory challenges. Mr. Vitorino noted that the EU-IOM Joint Initiative for Migration Protection and Reintegration, alongside other collaborative structures such as the African Union – European Union – United Nations Joint Task Force on the Migration Protection of Libya, is necessary to forge more durable and strategic management of migration in all its dimensions.
