President Juncker & Commissioner Hahn’s visit to Tunis
At the invitation of Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker paid an official visit to Tunisia on 25-26 October. President Juncker also met with Prime Minister Yousef Chahed and young representatives of the civil society. Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, Johannes Hahn signed four projects, increasing thus the total amount of EU aid in 2018 for the country to 300 million euros. This new financing will help support Tunisia in its democratic transition, modernisation of its economy and public policies. Talks covered areas including business competitiveness, energy transition, support for the justice reform, tax reform and the promotion of social and solidarity economy. According to Tunisian Presidency, the visit of the President of the European Commission was part of a shared desire between Tunisia and the EU to strengthen the strategic partnership and bilateral cooperation in several fields, in addition to the continuity of consultations on issues of common interest.
