Pope Francis in UAE: the first Roman Pope’s visit to Arabic Peninsula
On 3 – 4 – 5 February, Pope Francis visited UAE. He is the first pontiff in history to set foot on the Peninsula. During his visit the Head of Catholic Church met Sheikh Ahmed Al-Tayeb and the Grand Imam of Egypt’s Al-Azhar mosque. Referring to the many conflicts in the Middle East, Pope Francis directly denounced the “logic of armed power” and affirmed that “War cannot create anything but misery, weapons bring nothing but death”. UAE are directly involved in the Yemeni conflict as part of the Saudi Arabia –led coalition. The Grand Imam and the Pope signed a “Human Fraternity” document remembering the importance of an inter-religious dialogue. On 5 February Pope Francis celebrated in Abu Dhabi the first Papal Mass in the Peninsula, attended by 135.000 people.
