PLO votes to suspend recognition of Israel until it recognizes Palestinian state
During the 30th council of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) in Ramallah, the Central Committee voted on 29 October to suspend the recognition of Israel until the latter decides to recognize a Palestinian state along the pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. The council’s decision includes ending all kinds of security coordination with Israel as well as economic ties. In a statement issued at the conclusion of its 30th session, the PLO noted that Israel has continued to ignore its agreements and commitments toward Palestine and expressed its rejection of the so-called “Deal of the Century” saying it aims to separate Gaza from the West Bank and East Jerusalem. In recent months, the PLO Central Committee and the Palestinian National Council have reached a number of decisions calling for the dismantling of the Palestinian Authority, but Abbas and the PLO Executive Committee refrained from implementing them. This time, however, Secretary General of the PLO Executive Committee, Saeb Erekat, said on 30 October that severing ties with Israel would be done gradually in appliance with the council’s decision. He added that “the leadership seeks to preserve the Gaza Strip as a part of the Palestinian national territory and as an integral part of the territory of the occupied Palestinian state. However, the methods used by Hamas indicate that it is going towards separation”.
