Plenary debate on “Post-Arab Spring: way forward for Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Region”
On 26 March, a debate was held during the plenary session of the European Parliament about the MENA region in the context of the 8th year anniversary of the Arab Spring. The debate, called “Post-Arab Spring: way forward for Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Region”, was commented by HR/VP Federica Mogherini who issued a statement on this occasion. She agreed with the main point raised by the report which is that many of the demands that moved so many people to take the streets almost a decade after the Arab Spring are still largely unanswered. Mogherini then proceeded to emphasize three points: (1) the EU support for civil society in the Maghreb and the Mashreq is undeniable. Initiatives and programs such as the forum for Civil Society of the Neighborhood South, the permanent contacts though EU Delegations across the region, the essential work carried out by the European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights and the Young Med Voices Plus are pivotal in this regard. (2) Engaging with governments to “advocate the change we would like to see in our region”. Syria was also mentioned; the Third Brussels Conference on the Future of Syria and the Region put the Syrian civil society at the center stage. (3) “Human rights and democracy are always at the center of our engagement with all governments in the region”.
