Palestinian Foreign Minister Al Malki meets with EU representatives and calls for their support against the US peace plan
Palestinian Authority’s Foreign Minister Riyad Al Malki met with HR/VP Josep Borrell and with the European Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs in his first visit to EU institutions since the announcement of the US peace plan for the Middle East. During a meeting in Brussels on 20 February, Al Malki and HR/VP Josep Borrell discussed EU-Palestinian relations and Borrell highlighted the EU’s firm support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, in line with international law. Further, he stressed the EU’s continued support to Palestinian state building, and “welcomed the Palestinian commitment to engage in the resumption of meaningful negotiations”. The two representatives also discussed the situation on the ground, namely the political and humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the importance of moving forward with the intra-Palestinian reconciliation process. Al Malki also met with the European Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) on 19 February, and asked the EU to convoke an international peace conference to advance negotiations between Israel and Palestine. He noted that the Palestinian Authority is ready to negotiate with Israel as long as peace talks are based on international law and UN resolutions as terms of reference. On the same day, the AFET held a debate with Aharon Leshno-Yaar, Israeli Ambassador to the European Union.
