Palestine assumed the Chairmanship of the “Group of 77 and China” for 2019
Palestinian Authority President Mahmud Abbas has become the chairman of the G77 + China group on 15 January. He went to UN Headquarter in New York for the ceremony and on Monday he had a meeting with the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. In addition to making a plea to the UN to resist Israeli’s actions that could hamper the peace process, he also denounced the firing of rockets from the Gaza strip targeting Israeli civilians. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt, Sameh Shoukry, also attended the ceremony, in its quality of outgoing chairman of the group. The G77 + China is a UN coalition of 134 developing nations that recognized Palestine as a member state since 1976.
