Morocco regulates the status of about 50,000 migrants
Some 50,000 migrants living in Morocco have benefited from the two phases of the process to regularize their status, representing about 85% of the total number of applications submitted by foreign nationals of 113 nationalities, said Abdelouafi Laftit, Morocco’s Interior Minister. Laftit added that the time limit for the first renewal of the residence permit for the beneficiaries of this operation had been set at three years, provided that they would not commit any act contrary to the laws of the country. Regarding the reintegration of migrants, he noted, the ministry fulfills its duties within the ministerial commission responsible for overseeing the implementation of the new migration and asylum strategy. He noted that in order to strengthen this humanitarian approach, the Interior Ministry has promoted a voluntary return program by signing several agreements with the International Organization for Migration. According to these agreements, migrants residing illegally on Moroccan territory are voluntarily repatriated to their country of origin under conditions that respect their rights and dignity.
