Morocco recalls its ambassador to Saudi Arabia and suspends its participation in Yemen war
On 7 February, Moroccan government decided to recall its ambassador from Riyadh and suspend its participation in the Saudi-led coalition in the Yemeni war. Some Moroccan official sources indicated that the decision was taken as a result of a documentary about Western Sahara broadcasted by a Saudi TV channel that conveyed a message diverging from the Moroccan position. Morocco has been participating in the Saudi-led coalition since 2015. The Moroccan diplomatic move was anticipated on 23 January by a Moroccan FM’s interview for the Qatari TV Channel Al-Jazeera in which he declared that his country “changed the form and content of its participation in the Arab coalition after an assessment of developments on the ground” due to its concerns about the humanitarian crisis in Yemen. Tensions between Morocco and Saudi Arabia started with Moroccan neutrality over the Qatar blockade and developed with the Khashoggi case.
