Moroccan Navy rescues 271 irregular migrants and Tunisian Navy finds the bodies of 82 migrants dead in a shipwreck
On 15 July, Moroccan authorities announced that during the weekend their Navy rescued a total number of 271 irregular migrants in different operations. The majority of them were citizens of sub-Sahara’s countries that were trying to reach the European coasts of Spain. After they launched the alarm, Moroccan Navy intervened and brought them to Moroccan ports “in safety”. In the same week in central Mediterranean waters Tunisian authorities announced that their Navy found the 82 bodies that were missing after the shipwreck of 4 July. Also in that case the 4 migrants survived declared that they were trying to reach Europe through Malta or Italy. The International Organisation for Migration’s Missing Migrants Project estimates 682 migrants have died in the Mediterranean so far in 2019.
