Migrants freed from Libyan detention centres arrive to Romania and Rwanda, reported UNHCR
On 25 October the UNHCR confirmed the transfer of 70 migrants from Libyan detention centres directly to the emergency transit centre in Romania. These people will be resettled in third countries. The same day, 189 migrants arrived also to Rwanda and further 120 will arrive, after that the African country accepted to welcome 500 migrants temporarily. These transfers are part of the UNHCR strategy to evacuate the Libyan detention centres considered not appropriate to host migrants. A number of rights groups denounced the EU States’ efforts to block the arrival of migrants considering this policy as extremely dangerous for refugees. Last June for instance, the IOM and the UNHCR asked for a radical change in the EU’s approach to migrants in Libya.
