Mediterranean migrant arrivals to Europe reach 100,630 in 2018
The International Organisation for Migration reports that 100,630 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in 2018through November. This year marks the fifth straight year arrivals of irregular migrants and refugees have topped the 100.000 cases. The region most active destination this year is Spain with 49,013 migrant arrivals, almost 50% of all arrivals during 2018. However, the central route to Italy and Malta remains the deadliest. IOM’s Missing Migrants Project (MMP) estimates that at least 1,989 people died or went missing on migratory routes across the Mediterranean so far in 2018, 1,267 of them were taking the central route. However, general trends indicate that the number of migrants in 2018 will be lower than in the past three years.
